Abstract

Abstract

In our developing world, it has become necessary to know a second language in order to
keep up with global life, and therefore people have resorted to various ways to learn a
foreign language. While some of the people prefer face-to-face courses, institutes or one-
to-one private lessons, others prefer mobile foreign language learning applications. The
aim of this research is to reveal the opinions and preferences of adult users in the TRNC
on mobile-assisted foreign language learning applications in the new trending mobile
application markets. Although participation in the research was voluntary, the participants
attended in the research either face-to-face or online via digital platforms. In this study,
which is based on the scanning model, quantitative methods such as questionnaire,
resource analysis and interview techniques were applied in order to learn the views of the
participants. A questionnaire consisting of a total of 12 questions designed in the Likert
scale type was applied to the survey participants. As a result of the survey, most of the
users, including 67%, learned a foreign language for business and educational purposes,
while the remaining 33% tried to learn for hobby and communication purposes; It was
concluded that the most popular application around the users was Google Translate with a
rate of 37%. At the same time, the participants criticized the aspects of the applications
that they were satisfied with and found insufficient, and then they made various statements
about how the application could be developed and become better. However, since the
general findings are that users find mobile learning applications inadequate, it has been
suggested that applications should focus more on improvement of application and creating
space for users to apply practical skills.
